William Mitchell was born ca. 1770 in
Virginia. The specific location or county is unknown. It is possible William Mitchell
also had a brother, John Mitchell. This John Mitchell settled in Gallatin County,
Kentucky as early as 1809.
William Mitchell married Lucy Haydon about 1789
in Virginia. She was probably from Lancaster County, Virginia, but where they married
is unknown. Their first child, William, was born in Virginia, but the remainder of
their offspring were born in Rockingham County, North Carolina.
William Mitchell
moved his family to Gallatin (now Carroll) County, Kentucky by 1820, and he probably
died not long after their arrival since his succession included no land.
My
family descends from the eldest son, William, and I would like to trade notes with
fellow researchers/descendants of this family.
The known children of William Mitchell and Lucy Haydon were:
William Mitchell, born ca. 1790
Paul Mitchell, born ca. 1792
Mary Mitchell, born ca. 1799
George W. Mitchell, born ca. 1801
Edmond Mitchell, born May 6, 1803
Fielding Mitchell, born April 5, 1807
Elizabeth Mitchell, born ca. 1808
Joseph Mitchell, born July 10, 1810
Reuben Mitchell, born ca. 1813
James H. Mitchell, born ca. 1815
William Mitchell (born ca. 1790) had three children. My ancestor was his daughter, Lucinda Mitchell (1827-1886). His son, James Alexander Mitchell was born March 11, 1829, probably in Gallatin (now Carroll County) Kentucky. James married as his first wife, Mary Jane Skidmore on October 27, 1850 in Brown County, Indiana. From this marriage were four children, all born in Hamblem Township, Brown County:
John J. Mitchell, born ca. September 1851
William S. Mitchell, born ca. July 1856
Susan T. Mitchell, born ca. 1857
Salada Adeline Mitchell, born ca. November 1859
James' wife, Mary Jane Mitchell died in 1860. He remarried on August 17, 1865 to Rebecca E. Yocum in Morgantown, Morgan County, Indiana. From this marriage three children were born:
Harry Mitchell, born ca. 1865
Oliver Mitchell, born ca. 1871
Frank Mitchell, born ca. 1876
For nearly forty years James Alexander Mitchell lived in Indianapolis, Indiana. His wife rebecca died there about 1909. Around 1911 James was placed in the Indiana State Soldier's Home at Lafayette, Indiana due to his service in both the Mexican War and Civil War. Here James died on March 1, 1917. He was buried in Indianapolis.
I would be interested in contact with any descendant of James Alexander Mitchell, from either marriage. The following is known of his children's families.
By 1900 his son, John J. Mitchell, was living in Indianapolis with his wife, Catherine, and five children.
As of 1910 his son, William S. Mitchell, was a resident of Rush County, Indiana, living with his wife, Ida. William and Ida had three known children.
Salada Adeline Mitchell married Francis M. Henry and was living as of 1917 in Edinburgh, Indiana.
Harry Mitchell and wife, Clarissa, were living in Indianapolis with two children.
