I descend from the Gibson family which
was living in South Carolina prior to 1800. It is possible Newberry County, South
Carolina was their home. An Abraham Gibson conveyed land to his son Isaac in the
Fairfield District of Newberry County in 1787. There was a Jacob Gibson who died
in the Camden District of Newberry County in 1794, leaving a widow named Sarah and
children:
Abel, James, Jacob, Joseph, David, Stephen, Benjamin, Lucy and Judith.
My ancestor was James Gibson, parents unknown, who married a woman named
"Decey" Still. It is possible her name was Lettice Still. They were probably
married around 1790-1795. It seems they moved to Louisiana sometime after 1800.
What happened to James Gibson and Decey Still is not known. We can assume they died in Louisiana, but no other information is known. They died have two sons, both born in South Carolina who were residents of Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana by the early 1820's:
Uriah Gibson, born ca. 1799
Zedikiah Gibson, born ca. 1800
Uriah Gibson, the oldest of the known children of James & Decey Gibson, married on April 14, 1823 to Mary Nolin. This marriage was in Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana. It is believed there were no children from this marriage. Mary Nolin Gibson died ca. 1825-1826.
Uriah Gibson married secondly, Elizabeth Johnson, on December 20, 1826 in St. Landry Parish. Elizabeth was born ca. 1795 in Mississippi. There are no known children from this marriage. Uriah Gibson died before 1870 in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. His widow, Elizabeth, died after 1870, probably in Jefferson County, Texas.
Zedikiah Gibson, the second known child of James & Decey Gibson first married in Saint Landry Parish on May 3, 1823 to Sarah Hight, daughter of Ezekiel Hight and Mary Johnson. Sarah Hight was born ca. 1802 in Mississippi.
Zedikiah and Sarah remained in Saint Landry Parish until around 1828 when they
moved to neighboring Rapides Parish and lived in the Ten Mile Creek area. From this
marriage were seven known children:
Cyrena Gibson, born ca. 1826
J. Ezekiel Gibson, born ca. 1829
Amos Gibson, born March 21, 1832
Malissa Gibson, born ca. 1835
Gideon Gibson, born August 23, 1838
Elizabeth Gibson, born February 27, 1840
Ephriam B. Gibson, born ca. 1843
Zedikiah's wife, Sarah, died on January 11, 1866 in Rapides Parish. He married again on December 22, 1869 to Lavina Carter, daughter of Solomon Carter. She was born ca. 1846, probably in Rapides Parish. There were two children from this marriage born in Rapides Parish:
Sustan Gibson, born May 5, 1867
Asa Gibson, born July 15, 1868
Zedikiah Gibson died sometime before August 1873 in Rapides Parish. He was buried in Occupy Number 1 Cemetery near Ten Mile Creek next to his first wife. His Widow, Lavina, remarried sometime after 1880 to a man named "Hite" and she died around 1910 or later. She was buried in the Miller Cemetery, Starks, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.
My family descends from Asa Gibson. I would like to learn more about the South Carolina connection to my Gibson family, and determine more about this family in Newberry County. I am also looking for information about the Still family of the same area.
