Seeking information about the Garrard
family of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia.
My ancestor was William
Garrard, born January 1, 1760 in Stafford County. His parents are unknown. It is
possible he was a son of William Garrard and his wife Mary Naughty. This William
Garrard, Sr. was a Vestryman in Overwharton Parish and was father to James Garrard
(1747-1822), second governor of Kentucky, serving two terms.
My William Garrard
served during the American Revolution, enlisting in South Carolina in May 1779, serving
for three months under Captain Anderson Thomas. He was called again in 1780 to serve
under Captain Thomas. In 1781 he served with Thomas Parrot and Colonel Middleton.
William
Garrard married about 1789 to Ruth ?. They had five children. William died in Crawford
County, Illinois on November 8, 1839.
